See all of that produce in the above photo? It wasn’t just a prop. I juiced all of that, and then some, to make a giant batch of green juice. I think it’s safe to say I’m meeting all of the recommended fruit and vegetable servings…before 9am.

I have a very love/hate relationship with my juicer. I love the fresh juice, but I can’t stand cleaning the juicer afterwards. It’s not even that it takes all that long (maybe 5 or 10 minutes?), it’s just that I like to keep dish-washing to a minimum, and I don’t think I can put the juicer in the dishwasher. Bummer.

green_juice

Green juices are a big part of the Crazy Sexy Diet, and just as I had mustered up the willpower to commit to using my juicer on a daily basis, I read a very important line in the book: juice can be stored for up to two days in the fridge. YES!

And so what you see above was part of a massive batch of green juice I made for the next several days (still perfecting a recipe!). I’ll admit it doesn’t taste quite as great after it’s had time to sit, but only having to do the prep work every couple of days is 100% worth it to me. So, if cleaning the juicer is stopping you from making juice, I recommend emptying your produce drawer in one fell swoop.

Now onto that giveaway…

Last week, I was contacted by Hilary Greenleaf (awesome name, right?) offering to give away a couple of eBooks for her latest release, The New Green Smoothie Diet.

new_green_smoothie_diet

The book is full of information on the benefits of green smoothies, answers to common questions (how much do I need to drink each day? do I have to drink the whole glass in one sitting?), and recipes depending on your goals (weight loss, boosting energy, etc).

After reading the book, I will say that I do wish there were more explanations for some of the statements, particularly around not adding protein powders, milks, or other add-ins to smoothies. I’d be interested to know the “why” behind these recommendations. That aside, the recipes sound fantastic, and I think this book is a great starting point for people who are looking to boost their raw vegetable (and fruit) intake. I personally have my eye on the Blackberry Lettuce smoothie. Oh, the things we start looking forward to after just three days without processed sugar…berries never tasted so sweet.

I’ve been thinking about hopping on the green smoothie bandwagon for awhile now – this would be a great way to start off :)

This book would be great for me because I just started trying green smoothies!

I have also had a love/hate relationship with my juicer also. Just the thought of cleaning it makes me cringe but I know and understand the benefits of juicing but I always move toward smoothies. Yum! It would amazing to win this book to show me the real benefits behind the allmighty veggie and fruit smoothie combo.

Amanda March 7, 2012 at 3:36 pm

I know what you mean – it’s so much easier to just throw things in the blender than deal with the juicer!

Reply

Joy March 7, 2012 at 5:25 pm

that green diet seems hard…but pretty interesting

Reply

Amanda March 7, 2012 at 5:28 pm

It takes some prep work for sure, but because there’s a big focus on raw fruits and veggies, there isn’t much cooking involved. So far, I’m feeling pretty awesome. :)

I totally agree about the juicer! I love the juice mine makes but cleaning it is SUCH A PAIN! And it’s so nasty. All the pulpy muck. But there really is nothing like fresh squeezed juice….

Reply

Amanda March 7, 2012 at 5:41 pm

Yes, the end result it totally worth it, messy pulp and all!

I have been drinking green smoothies for awhile now, but I’m stuck on the same few recipes! I would love to find some new ways to change it up.

That’s interesting about the 2 day rule; I had always thought you were supposed to drink fresh juice right away. I try to make juice every morning and have the cleaning down to a science, takes me 3 minutes (!)… but there are definitely days where I forego juicing just to avoid the mess!

The book suggests it’s bad to include protein powders in smoothies? That blows my mind! It’s so interesting to hear different people’s ideas of what’s ‘healthy’ or ‘correct’ and what’s not.

Reply

Amanda March 7, 2012 at 6:45 pm

I was surprised about the protein powders too. I’m curious about the science behind that, since I had never heard that before.

I never really thought to prep a big batch…duh. I too hate cleaning the juicer. That and the food processor. Ugh.

Reply

Dylan March 7, 2012 at 9:54 pm

Taking the plunge into juicing isn’t the easiest thing – I’ve been going strong at about once a day for around 6 months now! I’d be a little careful with the 2 day rule – I’ve read that the juice loses a lot of nutrional value after even a day and is also a breeding grounds for bacteria with all of the sugars and lack of preservatives. I trust you’ve done your research though!

Reply

Amanda March 7, 2012 at 11:07 pm

Ew, the Crazy Sexy Diet book said up to 2 days is fine, but I’m going to look into that some more…

Reply

Amanda March 8, 2012 at 1:14 am

Okay, so I did more research. It seems like it depends on what you juice, but citrus and most veggies (cabbage aside) can be stored in the fridge for up to 48 hours in an airtight glass jar. At least that’s what the Fat, Sick & Nearly Dead guy said. :) But yeah – fresh is still optimal.

jaime March 7, 2012 at 11:15 pm

to be honest, i’ve never tried a green smoothie!! i’ve been dying to start since i know they are great, but i’m nervous that i’m gonna mess it up, or my proportions will be off… they all look so delicious though!! this book might be the push i need…

just checking on you after three days of no processed sugar…you ok? :) i would miss chocolate!

Reply

Amanda March 8, 2012 at 1:08 am

haha I’m ok. :) It actually hasn’t been too bad. The hardest part is after dinner when I really want chocolate! I’ve given it up for now (just a few weeks max), but I plan on splurging on some good dark chocolate after that!

I just recently discovered that juices can be stored for up to 2 days in the fridge and I was SO excited. I love fresh juices but cleaning all of the parts every. single. day gets really old…fast. Making a big batch every few days is the way to go!
This book looks amazing! <3

Yeah, my sweetness meter was definitely dialed down after my juice cleanse, which is always a good thing.

I have a Breville Juice Fountain Elite and put mine in the top rack of the dishwasher. I still have to scrub the mesh parts before they go in the dishwasher, but it’s still a lot better than scrubbing EVERY part.

I have a love/hate relationship with juicing too. It’s expensive and messy, but so worth it. My husband recently caught onto the trend and boy does he make a mess! Beet stains and orange peels all over the counter.

Are you doing anything with your pulp? I’ve started dehydrating mine and turning it into flour. A possible cracker recipe might be in the works…

Reply

Amanda March 8, 2012 at 5:37 pm

My husband is the same way! He’s not bothered by the mess, though. Meanwhile, I’m scrubbing down the wall because he somehow managed to get beet juice all over it. :)

I was thinking that I really need to do something with the pulp. I don’t have a dehydrator (it’s on my must-buy kitchen list), but maybe muffins or something. I’d love to see what you come up with for a cracker recipe! Very clever to turn the pulp into flour.

A juicer is pretty high up on my to-purchase kitchen items list. It looks like you made some pretty nutritious juice! I had to giggle when you mentioned in your post about the downfall of cleaning the juicer – a former roommate of mine used her juicer every day and she’d put it in the dishwasher…we ended up with fruit and veggie pulp all over our “clean” dishes. Drove us all nuts, but you gotta admire the nutrition motive. Looking forward to seeing more juices on your webpage, thanks!

My Champion juicer is 25 years old and it’s a real pain to clean as well, plus it weighs a ton and takes up too much counterspace to leave out all the time. Been dreaming about a Vitamix or Blendtec for green smoothies, but maybe this book can offer alternatives that are suitable for typical Osterizer style machine. Agreed that eating more greens is about the best dietary shift most of us should make, and a smoothie is a great way to ingest mass quantities without hours of chewing. Thanks.
