- I plowed through Brendan Brazier’s Thrive book last week, studying it as if I were back in college preparing for an exam. If it hadn’t been a library book, I would have totally whipped out my yellow highlighter and done what I used to do, which is highlight 85% of the words on the pages. I just never liked feeling like I might be missing something important, you know? Instead, I tore up little pieces of post-it notes, marked all of the sections that I wanted to remember, and then went back and typed up the quotes the day the book was due back…as if I’ll never ever have that book in my possession again (I will – it’s next on my list of books to buy).
There was a lot of information in Thrive that I found interesting and helpful, but two of the quotes that resonated the most with me were actually about career and general happiness, not nutrition:
I can’t over-emphasize the importance of enjoying your livelihood: You can’t be discontent for that many hours of each day and expect to be healthy in other aspects of your life.
Many people put up with things that are unpleasant but tolerable, rather than changing them; their situation needs to become unbearable before they take action. So, in effect, an unbearable job is better than one that is simply dissatisfying, since it will be the catalyst for change.
If you’re familiar with my story or have been reading my blog for a while, you know that I went through a really rough time with my career, moving to San Francisco and back, and just generally identifying what I want my life to look like and taking steps to make that vision a reality. I have lived these quotes, hit that point of unbearableness, and come out of it a much stronger, more decisive, and grateful person. I’m not exactly where I want to be, but each day I’m a little bit closer.
- On a lighter note, I discovered the site Vitacost last week thanks to a recommendation from my friend Kait. She said it was generally even less expensive than iHerb. She’s right. I splurged on Vega One (if you haven’t tried their new protein powder – you must!), hemp oil, coconut flour, coconut butter, hemp seeds, organic shampoo and face wash…this is going to be a problem. A fun, delicious problem. Also, that Vega One was a whopping $15 cheaper online than at Whole Foods.
- I discovered organic champagne grapes earlier this week and I may never eat regular grapes again. They’re intensely sweet and grape-y (that’s a new word), and oh-so-adorably small. Aaron gets frustrated that they’re miniature and not conducive to shoveling in his face, but I’m looking on the bright side and saying they encourage mindful eating. Unless you plan on eating the stems, which I’m not sure you can even eat, these grapes will force you to slow down. This is a good thing.
- I have no idea how Olive is not bald considering the amount she sheds. We regularly brush her, and yet I still need to vacuum every day. I don’t, but I should. We’ve joked about shaving her, but in all honesty, most of the time she’s such a pain in the butt that her good looks may be the only thing working in her favor. The other day, I was folding laundry and Olive walked up next to me, positioned herself over our faux sheepskin rug, and made the biggest pee I have ever seen. We’re talking gallon-sized, like she had been saving it up for days. No warning, no trying to hide it – she just let it rip and sauntered off. I won’t get into how long it took me to hand wash, dry, and brush out that stupid rug. It’s just a good thing Olive is cute.

Wow, the Avocado Caprese is gorgeous! And I love the name Olive for a dog!
Thanks, Brigitt! The avocado caprese is so simple, but so good.
Bahahaha glad I could convert you to the other side!
Sorry about Olive….that is not a fun situation. =/
Every time I make a Vitacost purchase, I will blame you.
That first quote pretty much epitomizes the last 3 years for me. I know we’ve gone over this before but I feel like we lived pretty parallel lives during that time. Also, the Olive pee story…hysterical. I’m sure I wouldn’t think so if I were in your shoes, but looking in from the outside…hysterical.
Those last few years were rough, to say the least. It’s kind of crazy to look back and reflect on where I was then versus now.
I was furious about Olive peeing on the rug! Not really at the time, surprisingly, but definitely when I was hunched over the bathtub scrubbing the rug. This is why she’ll NEVER be allowed on the furniture.
I LOVED Thrive! I liked his writing style and the way he explained things in plain English (for those of us who don’t love all the ins and outs of science this is very important!). So funny, I too got it from the library and wanted to highlight all over the place. But I just need to break down and buy it. I want those recipes in my life!! I think he has at least one other book too, right?
I also really liked the straight-forward writing. I think he has a recipe book and another for fitness, in addition to the Thrive nutrition guide.
dayv actually got me thrive for me birthday. i have totally been inhaling every word. i’m not done it yet, but i did get through the part that those two quotes are from and felt like they resonated with my life as well. he’s so inspiring..
and guess what else i got for my birthday?! chocolate vega one. oh yeahhhh..
Those are some pretty awesome birthday gifts! Nice job, Dayv!
I agree about Brendan as well…very inspiring.
That book sounds really interesting! I have always been a big proponent of “if you don’t like something or find yourself complaining about it non-stop, do something and change it” Easier said than done of course.
I totally know what you mean by grape-y. Have you ever noticed how grape flavored stuff doesn’t actually taste like grapes? why can’t anyone figure that out?
Your Olive story has me rolling. That is sooo something Chloe would do (and has I’m pretty sure) Its like their brain just completely forgets everything it has learned and their “animal instinct” takes over. I need to pee so here I will pee! Crazy! good thing we love them.
Yeah, what is up with the grape flavored stuff?? You’re so right – it never tastes like actual grapes!
I always thought that dogs just told you when they needed to go out, but apparently that’s not the case, at least not for Olive. We’ve even tried ringing a bell when we go outside to see if she would do the same. No luck. She’s so in the moment that I’m not sure she even has the capacity to think that way!
Wow… I might have to check out that book!
I don’t know if I should venture onto Vitacost. It might get me in trouble. Does it have the rewards program like iHerb does?
You would not believe the amount of vacuuming I do. And dragging that stupid thing UP and DOWN the stairs every single day… ugh.
We’ve been watching our friend’s lab for a week – and he sheds too- black hair!
About the pee- the dog we are watching peed ALL over the floor on Sunday. He didn’t ask to go out or anything. I flipped out on him. He’s peed at our house once before too- but his owner says he’s never ever had an accident at home (and he’s like 5 years old I think). I guess it’s nerves- but it still made me livid!
I highly recommend the book. I think you’d really like it because it’s all about fueling for athletic performance, what to eat for recovery, etc.
I’m not sure if Vitacost has a rewards program. I’ll have to look into that.
I think the next dog I get needs to be some sort of non-shedding breed. I thought Honey shed a lot, but Olive definitely wins on that front. It’s borderline absurd.
It sounds like the dog you’re watching is either nervous, or maybe he’s marking his territory or something? It’s one thing when they’re puppies and can’t hold it, but it’s so frustrating when you feel like they’re just being jerks! Olive only has the occasional accident, but I feel like she should at least be making some sort of an effort to let us know she needs to go out. The kicker with the last time was that she had just been out a couple of hours before. And the fact that she did it literally right next to me – ugh!
I really like the quote about a healthy attitude and discontentment. Some things are so complicated until you read or hear it simply stated. I will definitely have to check out Vitacost! I think I’ve visited the site, but haven’t purchased anything. I love Garden of Life’s raw protein, but it’s so darn expensive! Maybe they have it cheaper…. Thanks for mentioning it!
I love Garden of Life brand too! I just tried their vanilla protein powder last week when I was deciding what to buy next. Vega won, but only because it had 50% of the daily requirements for vitamins. I think Garden of Life is quite a bit less expensive though, so I should probably work that into my rotation.
Olive is adorable. I can relate to this quote “Many people put up with things that are unpleasant but tolerable, rather than changing them; their situation needs to become unbearable before they take action” – There are days I feel that way at work. I wish I could be stronger or it was easier to voice an opinion without scrutinizing a career.
I felt similarly to you about work when I was in an office. I was generally very open with my co-workers and manager when I had an opinion (for better or worse), but I eventually learned I had to pick my battles. It’s a tricky balancing act, for sure.
I love those quotes! Today I just blogged the David Bowie quote, “I don’t know where I’m going from here but I promise it won’t be boring.” I am in need of some serious life changes, and your totally inspires me!
*your story totally inspires me
I love that David Bowie quote. Random side note: my brother’s middle name is Bowie after him. As far as needing to make some life changes – go for it!!! It’s usually not the easy thing to do, but it’s so very worth it to pursue your passions.
