The Liebster Award

Last week, I found out Pickles & Honey was nominated for the Liebster Award by the very lovely Caren of Voodies. If you’re not already familiar with her blog, Caren has an amazing story. A couple of highlights: she left a lucrative corporate career to study yoga at an ashram in India and recently trained for and rocked a bikini competition! I know from personal experience how hard (yet totally rewarding) it can be to make those kinds of life changes and pursue our passions, so I felt an instant connection to Caren’s story.

Okay, on to the award! To accept the nomination, you’re supposed to:

  1. Write 11 random facts about yourself
  2. Answer the 11 questions given by the blogger who nominated you
  3. Create 11 new questions
  4. Nominate 11 bloggers and mention them in the post
  5. Thank the blogger who nominated you and tell the bloggers you’ve nominated

Sounds a lot like the One Lovely Blog Award, except that was seven random facts, questions, and nominations. So, how about I spare you a whole bunch of talking about myself and just limit this to four facts? See what I did there? 7 + 4 = 11. Those math classes are really paying off.

11 4 (more) random facts about me:

  1. I can’t go to bed with socks on my feet. It just feels so…restrictive. Same thing goes for pajama pants, although I’m having to get over that one because the heat only seems to turn on around 3am. At which time it blasts, turns my bedroom into a sauna, and I end up waking up to take off my pants and all of the blankets on our bed. Being able to control the thermostat is a luxury I do not have.
  2. In addition to geeking out over food and nutrition books, I’m currently borderline-obsessed with the natural beauty and clean home genres. Ever since my skin freaked out from that moisturizer the other month, I’m on a quest to detoxify everything from body stuff, to makeup, to cleaning products. I’m reading No More Dirty Looks and with each chapter, I throw most of what I’ve been using in the trash. It feels good! Sidenote: I didn’t realize the authors had a site until just now. That’s going to be a time suck.
  3. I’m making a concerted effort to avoid processed sugar, which means I’m hitting the stevia hard when I have a sugar craving. Please don’t tell me stevia is also bad for me. Between giving up gluten and basically all of the personal care products I’ve used for years, I’m not sure I can handle that right now. Or maybe tell me. Let’s just get this over with.
  4. I have this idea in my head that I would like to have a house on a bunch of land, with free-roaming farm animals (not for eating), and grow my own organic food. And then I remember that there are lots of bugs in the country and I hate bugs. Is there a way to live on a farm without the bugs? No?

Caren’s questions, answered…

  1. Alive or dead, famous or not, who’s your greatest role model that has inspired you the most? My parents – they are just really good people, in addition to being great parents. Also, I’ve been reading a lot of Kris Carr recently, and she’s pretty damn inspiring.
  2. What’s your favorite type of cuisine? Thai. Japanese is a close second.
  3. Tell me what you love the most and the least about the city you live in. Most: Boston’s high energy, intellectual vibe. It feels very productive – like people are always thinking. Least: It’s expensive! Not as expensive as SF or NYC, but where I live, the average home price is somewhere around $1.5 million. We’re going to be saving for that down payment for. ev. er…
  4. Why did you start blogging? To challenge myself and to be a part of the healthy living/vegan community. I am constantly learning and re-evaluating, which is a very good thing.
  5. What insecurity do you constantly have to work at overcoming? The need to be “perfect” or really good at everything. I’m trying to have more fun instead of putting so much pressure on myself.
  6. What do you think is worth spending good money on? Food. And workout clothes.
  7. Is that your “natural” hair color? Nope. I have a highlighting addiction. My natural color is dark brown, but I like to play around with auburn/caramel-y highlights.
  8. Favorite day of the week and why? Friday. It tends to be more quiet work-wise, and I like the anticipation of the weekend.
  9. How do you chillax and unwind? An intense spin class (it’s like therapy), snuggling with Aaron and the puppies, and taking a long shower.
  10. Pets?  Do you have some and what are they? I’m not sure if I’ve ever mentioned it, but I have two puggles.
  11. Favorite blog to read? I can’t pick just one. Check out my nominations below for some of my favorites!

EEek! I’ve been nominated—thanks, dear! Although now I’m nervous :).

Loved learning more about you (and finding even more things that we have in common! See: socks, clean living/eating (this we knew), having a little farm, what we spend money on, etc.

And, your #10 is the best :).

Holy cow, thanks girl! I feel super cool that you nominated me, since yours has been a blog that I’ve read since before I started my own. It’s always cool to read more you….my husband and I love Thai food as well. There’s a little place in town that serves up a pineapple rice dish inside the cored pineapple, and it is quite delicious!
I may have to follow your lead and just add four more things….I’m just seriously not that interesting! :-)

    • says

I’m sure you are that interesting, but feel free to include as many things as you like! :)
That pineapple rice dish sounds so good. I think I need some Thai this weekend.

I have the exact same farm dream! Only I love bugs, so that won’t really be a problem for me. Also, if you’re looking to naturalize your household cleaning, “Salt, Lemons, Vinegar and Baking Soda” is an awesome book. Tells you how to do just about anything with only those 4 supplies.

    • says

I wish I loved bugs. I don’t know…maybe it’s a result of spending my early years in NYC? Although, don’t even get me started on roaches. I stressed myself out just typing that.
Off to go look up that book – thanks for the recommendation!

  4. says

Ah, thanks for the kind words girl. I think it’s amazing how similar we are (although I did go to bed with socks on last night!).

My biggest investment is also food and workout gear. I totally nerd out on nutrition and fitness books as well.

I’m scared to dive into the green cosmetic genre as it’s will probably mean an entire overhaul of my makeup drawer!!

    • says

I feel you on the makeup thing. I don’t even want to think about how much money I just threw in the trash the other day when I was going through mine, but it does feel good to try to minimize what I use. Plus, shopping for new products is pretty fun. :)

  5. says

awwww thank you! I love these things!
I totally am the same as your #1. I was just telling Paul the same thing last night. I was like “I hate taking my socks off when I get in to bed b/c my feet are cold, BUT it never fails, at like 2am I HAVE to take them off b/c I am burning up. Same with the pants. So I just HAVE to leave them off getting into bed. No matter how cold I am at the time.

I can’t wait to do this…probably at the beginning of the new year! yippee!

What a nice Christmas present for the blog (and me)- thanks for the nomination, I always find it cool when blogs I like, like me too :) Not too sure about stevia, but I totally get you on that, I’ve been using dates as my sugar replacement.. I find it works surprisingly well, even in my coffee. Happy Holidays!

    • says

I’ve been using dates too recently! My new thing is to blend a medjool date in some almond milk and raw cacao powder and then heat it a little for hot chocolate. So good!

  7. says

AWE! Thanks so much for the nomination! I did a Leibster post earlier this week and I was going to nominate you but I was like 99% sure you had already gotten a ton! Guess I mixed it up with the One Lovely Blog Award :) OMG, I’m totally with you on the socks, it’s making me squirm just thinking about it.

Thanks, Mai-Lis! I have received a couple of Liebster awards before, but I figured it had been a while since I did a “random things about me” kind of post. :)
