Chocolate hummus. It sounds a little wacky and earthy-crunchy at first. When I was working on this recipe, I fully expected there were going to be people who were super pumped to have a healthy, protein-packed chocolate dessert option, and others who thought, “Why are you messing up my chocolate by adding chickpeas?” If you fall into the second group, you’re certainly not alone. Almost everyone I ran this recipe by was initially skeptical, then intrigued, and finally—one bite in—they got it: “This tastes like a peanut butter cup with the consistency of chocolate mousse.” ← I was originally going for Hope Chocolate Hummus meets peanut butter cookie dough, but peanut butter cup chocolate mousse is maybe even better.
Admittedly, this chocolate hummus took some tinkering in the kitchen. I wanted the health benefits and the protein of a chickpea-based dip, but I also wanted it to taste like rich, peanut-buttery dark chocolate…not beans. To achieve that goal I used lots of cocoa powder and creamy peanut butter, plus the ingredient that takes it into chocolate mousse territory: REBBL’s Dark Chocolate Protein Elixir.
I’m smitten with all of REBBL’s drinks, especially the Dark Chocolate Protein because it adds 16 grams of plant-based protein and somehow tastes like the most amazing, elevated chocolate milk. It’s my go-to for creating higher-protein chocolate desserts that are truly nourishing, and I love that it also includes a few of my favorite super-herbs: maca, reishi, and ashwagandha. The maca supports energy levels and balanced hormones, the reishi helps with detoxification, and the ashwagandha supports endurance, cognitive function, and relaxation. I can’t personally taste the super-herbs in REBBL’s elixirs (a good thing, in my opinion), but I can feel their positive impact on my mood throughout the day.
Along with the Dark Chocolate Protein, I like to mix in crushed peanuts for some texture, plus mini chocolate chips (more chocolate!), coconut sugar, and a touch of pure maple syrup for sweetness. The end result is a 10 ingredient, high-protein chocolate hummus that’s wholesome enough to have as a snack and decadent enough to enjoy for dessert.
Serve it with fresh fruit, pretzels, and graham crackers for dipping, or do something a little crazy and use it to make vegan s’mores! On a whim the other night, I decided to try peanut butter chocolate hummus in place of a standard chocolate bar, with a layer of peanut butter in some and a layer of sliced strawberries in the others. I’m patting myself on the back for this discovery because it ended up being total s’mores perfection!
P.S. Big high fives to my fellow burnt marshmallow lovers. ♥
- 1 (15 ounce) can cooked chickpeas, rinsed and drained
- ½ cup cocoa powder
- ½ cup coconut sugar
- ½ cup REBBL Dark Chocolate Protein Elixir
- ⅓ cup creamy salted peanut butter
- 1 tablespoon pure maple syrup
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- ¼ teaspoon sea salt
- ¼ cup + 2 tablespoons vegan mini chocolate chips, divided
- 2 tablespoons crushed peanuts
- Add all of the ingredients except for the chocolate chips and crushed peanuts to a food processor. Process until very smooth, scraping down the sides of the bowl as necessary.
- Transfer to a mixing bowl and fold in ¼ cup chocolate chips.
- Refrigerate for at least 1 hour, then top with the remaining chocolate chips and crushed peanuts. Serve with sliced fruit, graham crackers, pretzels, or enjoy straight off of the spoon!
If you don't own a food processor or would prefer an extra smooth texture, you can also make this in a high-speed blender.
You’ll have about a cup of the REBBL Dark Chocolate Protein drink left after you make this recipe. Feel free to sip it alongside your hummus, add it to a smoothie, or mix it into overnight oats (chocolate for breakfast!).
