End of Week Reading

Salt Sugar Fat // picklesnhoney.com

I am still working my way through my current book, Salt Sugar Fat, this time with a non-library copy so I can highlight up a storm. I’m planning to do a separate post on it soon, but based on the fact that I’m now on highlighter number two, I’d say you should read the book in its entirety.

For now, here are a few shorter reads (and funny videos) that caught my attention. No highlighter required.

“It would appear that aging happens in cycles. You start seeing a change—grays sprouting, a butt cheek falling—you fixate, then it kind of stops or slows, or maybe you just get used to it… What does it mean to age gracefully? What aspects of aging do you see as charming, or at the very least bearable? And which do you actively try to fight?”

I always look forward to reading the comments on these posts because people’s perspectives are so varied and often so wise.

Sidenote: Have you read the NMDL book yet? It had a huge impact on my choices in beauty products.

“Have you ever wondered whether those expensive veggie washes are worth the money? The editors of Cook’s Illustrated, a serious foodie magazine, wondered too.”

“…paired with overdramatic photographs of horribly unhappy people, which transforms the dramatic flair of each absurd statement into a visually entertaining collection. In all seriousness, the series is actually a reminder to keep our lives in perspective.”

“‘I’ve read somewhere that you’ll be sending Hulk Hogan to Syria. Or is that more of a job for Tonya Harding?…What should we do about North Ikea?'”

There are so many gems.

And finally, I saved the best for last:

Esther the Wonder Pig

Esther, who was initially expected to grow to be a fifty pound mini-pig, has turned out to be a four hundred pound “accidental activist, super model, comedian & ambassador for change.” Her dads are on a mission to open an animal sanctuary, saying:

“We want to help show you that she understands everything we say to her. She knows what’s happening and she feels every emotion we do. She is a living, loving and feeling creature, not a product or a piece of pork.”

I LOVE this story! Have I ever told you that one of my dreams is to adopt a pig and name her Clementine? I joke about Clementine all the time with Aaron, who indulges me only because we live in an apartment in the city and he knows we will not actually have a home filled with puggles and pigs. But, I sometimes look at the pigs available for adoption on the MSPCA website…let’s keep that our secret though, okay?

For now, we can all follow the most adorable Esther on instagram, facebook, twitter, and youtube and help her family make that sanctuary a reality.

Tell me: what are you reading?
